What Squarespace's export actually includes
Squarespace exports a single XML file in WordPress format — it's built for one destination, and it's a subset of your site even there. What comes across: your basic pages (text content), one blog with its posts, and text/image blocks in standard layouts.
What gets left behind: your entire design (fonts, colors, spacing, templates), product and store pages, events, albums, and video pages, member areas, most specialized blocks, and your image files themselves — the XML only references image URLs on Squarespace's servers, so if you close the account without saving them, those links die.
In other words: the export is a text backup, not a website. Whatever you import it into still needs its design rebuilt from zero.

Squarespace export — frequently asked questions
Can I export a Squarespace site as HTML?
Not officially — Squarespace has no HTML/CSS export. Scraper tools can snapshot your rendered pages, but the result is a frozen copy that's painful to edit and loses anything dynamic. The official export is WordPress-format XML only.
Does the export include my online store?
No. Product pages don't export in the XML at all. You can download your product data as a CSV separately (inventory, names, prices), but the product pages themselves must be rebuilt wherever you land.
Do my images come with the export?
Only as links to Squarespace's servers. Import the XML somewhere while your Squarespace site is still live and most importers will fetch the images; cancel first and the links go dark. Either way, save your originals before closing the account.
Can I keep my domain?
Yes. Domains registered through Squarespace can be transferred out or repointed at your new site. Nothing about leaving the platform affects your ownership.
Will leaving hurt my SEO?
